Over the last few months, I’ve developed a blogging routine. It involves plenty of coffee and an upbeat Spotify playlist, and it begins with a scan of my favorite news and business sites to spark ideas. It’s funny to think that while this routine is a regular part of my week, just months ago Virtucom Group was deciding whether blogging was right for us and how we would tackle the task. During that time our CEO gave tons of encouragement and frequently repeated advice that kept us moving forward: don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.
This advice is a great mantra for content creation as well, no matter what stage you're at with your company's content. It can be tempting to tell yourself that it’s not the right time to get serious about content, or even that there's no need for it. There’s no room in the budget. You don’t have the staff numbers or training. You want to dip your toes in, but it’s just too overwhelming.
But here's some tough love: these are not good excuses to remain inactive. When you get caught up in these worries, you’re letting perfect be the enemy of good. The truth is, the brands and firms that create the most powerful, engaging content, the kind of stuff that wins not just customer loyalty, but customer love, were not always content powerhouses. Their website didn’t always look the way it does today. Their product copy wasn’t always slick, polished and attention-grabbing. They did not always interact with their clients in the effortless way you admire today. Instead, they put their heads together or reached out to a content provider, built a strategy and put it into action. Odds are they may look back on a history of hits and misses. But failure is just as strong a teaching tool as success, and it’s impossible to experience either without deciding to get started.
Perfection is a great goal, but it’s not an achievable one. Instead, aim for content that lands firmly between good and perfect – content that is fresh and exciting, but also provides room to learn and grow. Waiting for your resources and strategies to be 100% perfect won’t yield that kind of result because it won’t yield any results at all. Whether your first step is gathering an internal team or reaching out to a firm that can help you achieve your goals, the sooner you act the sooner you’ll see results. And while they may not be perfect, they will point you in that direction.
