Typically we share our ideas and practices on our blog, but every so often we like to put a spotlight on other great reads. Last time our focus was on content creation, but this week we're ready to discuss another important aspect of doing business: leadership.
Follow the Leader. You probably remember playing that game as a child, when everyone would have to follow the actions of the line's leader. If you failed to do so, you were out of the game. Why did we play that? Why did we think it was OK to follow the leader and not be the leader? Why didn't we protest or boycott if our name wasn't chosen to lead the way? Now that we're adults, there's no time like the present to take on a leadership role.
How does this relate to content creation and data management? Your content and practices are only as good as your team, and a team is only as good as its members. Studying the craft and honing your skills are critical, but so is meaningful leadership. Take a peek at these articles for great advice on how to inspire, motivate and grow your content team to greater heights.
The leadership practices described in John Jantsch's piece, What I Know For Sure About Leadership could apply to any industry, but his ideas are particularly appropriate for anyone who is ready to step up and lead a content team. His focus on growing yourself seems really spot-on, and the notion that bringing the team into alignment by ensuring everyone understands exactly what they're doing and why they're doing it is extremely important when building your brand by creating content. When the mission is clear, great results follow.
When employees see you as a reliable companion, your success will blossom. Murray Newlands offers suggestions for thriving as a trusted leader in "Inspire Loyalty With Your Leadership: Here's How". We especially like his suggestions about getting your hands dirty. Rolling up your sleeves and getting involved with your content team is sure to show them how much you value their work and that you're ready to empower them with the tools they need.
Sonia Simone takes inspiration from Jon Stewart and The Daily Show as she explains how to position yourself as an authority in The New Authenticity and Authority: What It Looks Like, How to Use It. She points out that whether you love or hate the show, it offers some excellent suggestions for establishing yourself as an authority with the realness that contemporary audiences demand. This is an older article, but definitely worth a look.
