By analyzing 100 million article headlines between March, 1 2017 and May 10, 2017, Buzzsumo found that the top five headline phrases on Facebook, as measured by engagement, were:

  • Will make you
  • This is why
  • Can we guess
  • Only X in
  • The reason is

On the other end of the spectrum, Buzzsumo’s findings indicated that the top five worst performing headline phrases were:

  • Control of your
  • Your own business
  • Work for you
  • The introduction of
  • What’s new in

However, this research doesn’t mean that you need to or should even include “will make you” in all of your headlines going forward or completely omit the phrase, “control of your.” If there’s one key takeaway from this study, it’s that down-to-earth, simple titles are incredibly popular.

As you craft headlines, make sure they’re clear and practical, so that anyone and everyone can understand them. This means no fifty-cent words and definitely no jargon. Your prospects shouldn’t need to consult a search engine just to comprehend the title of your article.
